Lesson 20 ended by noting that the Gītā keeps preferring one approach. This is that approach — and it is probably the single most socially consequential idea in this course.
Bhakti comes from √bhaj, and the lexicon's earliest senses are startlingly unemotional: distribution, partition, separation, attested from the Ṛgveda; then a division, a portion, a share; then belonging to, being a part of. The devotional sense — attachment, devotion, fondness, trust, homage, worship, faith or love as a religious principle — comes later in the entry, cited from the Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad, the Gītā and the Purāṇas.
