Lesson 38 founded a household. A household in this scheme exists partly to continue a line, and a line has obligations running in both directions. This lesson takes the backward one.
Preta is glossed departed, deceased, dead — and then, as a masculine noun, the spirit of a dead person, especially before the obsequial rites are performed.
That qualifier is the whole architecture. The word does not name death; it names an interval. The dead are preta until something is done, and then they are something else.

Month 2 · Lesson 39. The word for the dead names a stage rather than a state, the offering-ball also means livelihood and the body, and the family that mourns is defined as the family that shares it. Inheritance follows the offering.
