Food

Lesson 34 named the media through which purity and impurity travel — water, touch, time and food — and said food is the principal one. This lesson takes the consequences.

The Gītā states the frame in one verse.

yajña-śiṣṭāśinaḥ santo mucyante sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ | bhuñjate te tv aghaṃ pāpā ye pacanty ātma-kāraṇāt — "The good, who eat the remnant of sacrifice, are released from all faults; but those wicked ones who cook for their own sake eat sin." (3.13)

That is not a rule about ingredients. It is a rule about whether the food has been through an offering before it reaches you. Cooking that terminates in yourself is the fault; cooking that passes through a deity and returns is not.
