Jāti: The Order People Actually Live In
Lesson 31 left the four-fold scheme where the texts leave it: stated once in the Ṛgveda as the answer to a riddle, turned into occupations by Manu, and grounded in guṇa and karma rather than birth by the Gītā.
None of which describes a society. This lesson is about the word that does.
The lexicon's first sense of jāti is the plainest one: birth, production, cited from the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa, Manu and the Mahābhārata. Then re-birth. Then something more technical: the form of existence — as a man, an animal, and so on — fixed by birth, cited to Manu and, notably, to Yogasūtra 2.13.
