Sāṃkhya: Counting the World
Lesson 46 ended by noting that one of the six begins not from God or the Veda but from suffering. This is that system, and it is the one whose vocabulary this course has been borrowing since Lesson 7.
duḥkha-trayābhighātāj jijñāsā tad-apaghātake hetau — "From the assault of the threefold suffering arises the desire to know the means of removing it." (Kārikā 1)
The second verse then does something a reader of Lesson 4 will not expect.
dṛṣṭavad ānuśravikaḥ sa hy aviśuddhi-kṣayātiśaya-yuktaḥ — the remedy known from scripture is like the visible one: it too is impure, perishable, and admits of degrees. And what is better than both follows from discriminating the manifest, the unmanifest and the knower.
